BREAKING: Donald Trump’s MAGA theocracy takes a horrifying turn for the worse as his administration proposes a ban on VA abortions for all veterans even in instances of rape or incest.
And it gets so much worse…
Under Trump’s new Christian Nationalist rule, doctors working at the US Department of Veterans Affairs would be forbidden from performing abortions even under the aforementioned conditions. The draft of the rule also bans health providers from counseling female veterans about abortions.
This rule is particularly horrifying when one considers the fact that sexual assault is rampant in the U.S. military. 1/3 of women and one in 50 men stated that they were forced into sexual activity while serving. Some surveys have found that actually 2/3 female veterans had endured sexual abuse.
“We fought for our freedoms and deserve the healthcare that comes with that,” Rita Graham, a former US Army artillery officer told the Guardian.
“I am a veteran, a mother, and my abortion saved my life,” Mary Dodson-Otten, a nurse and air force veteran who lives outside Atlanta, wrote in the comments of the draft regulations.
“I don’t think I would have survived, whether it would have been him hurting me or me hurting me,” she told the Guardian, speaking about an abusive service member boyfriend who got her pregnant in her twenties.
While the new rule would carve out a slim exception for abortions “when a physician certifies that the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term,” there will still be a chilling effect on such procedures. Doctors will be reluctant to perform abortions even in life-threatening situations because a MAGA official might claim afterward that the abortion was unnecessary. This rule will terrorize doctors, inflict suffering on innocent veterans, and cause an untold number of forced births.
“Women are going to die,” said Caitlin Russell, a former US Army Captain who is now an expert in female veterans health at the University of Pennsylvania. She added that the exception will force women to lie on hospital beds waiting until they’re literally “on death’s door.”
Once again, we see Donald Trump betraying our veterans to pander to his deranged MAGA base. These brave women deserve better than this disgrace of a commander-in-chief. And it’s unfortunately unsurprising that he would push a rule like this. Trump himself is an avowed sexual predator and adjudicated rapist who sees women as objects. He delights in stripping away their rights.
