It’s been a turbulent week for WNBA star Brittney Griner, and not just because of her performance on the court. The Atlanta Dream center has sparked a tough controversy after a video surfaced online showing her visibly upset on the bench during Thursday night’s rematch against the Indiana Fever.
While the game itself ended in a tight 91-90 win for the Dream earlier in the week, the focus has since shifted to a heated moment involving Griner. Cameras caught her yelling something during her time on the bench, and though the audio isn’t clear, many fans believe she took a direct shot at rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.
Social media users allege that Griner called Clark a “F–king white girl” following a frustrating night that saw her log just 25 minutes and only two shot attempts due to foul trouble.

Over 2.3 million people have viewed the short clip of Griner’s outburst on X (formerly Twitter), sparking heavy criticism and calls for disciplinary action. Although the footage lacks clear audio, fans believe they heard a racial insult and haven’t held back in their reactions.

The backlash grew louder as more fans weighed in, with one writing, “I’m stunned, stunned I tell you, that the WNBA is not going to investigate the blatant racism of Brittney Griner.” Others echoed similar sentiments, accusing the league of selective accountability.

Despite the uproar, the WNBA hasn’t launched a formal investigation or released a statement about the incident. The Atlanta Dream still plan to start Griner in Saturday’s game against the Dallas Wings. For now, only Griner and those close to her know exactly what she said in the heat of the moment.
